Yesterday afternoon I decided to check our Twitter account as I usually do. To be entirely honest the amount of replies we get on Twitter daily is not huge which is why to my surprise we had nearly 50 angry replies from self-proclaimed, “Maggots,” (Slipknot fans) and Dj Starscream fans in our replies. Actually this whole thing started because of a flustered response by Sid Wilson (Dj Starscream) on Twitter.
When we started this band, it wasn’t until two years in that any one had ever brought to our attention that someone was performing under the moniker of, Dj Starscream. While this worried us at first, we decided to do some research on his work before making any drastic decisions.
After listening to some of his music and viewing his website it was immediately clear just how distinguishable we were from one another. While this put us at ease this realization alone was not enough reason to make us feel in the clear. But it turns out there was another reason we still felt uneasy…
If you didn’t know, yes. Starscream is a stolen name. George and I took the name from the popular, Transformers franchise, because we are terribly unoriginal and found ourselves unable to create a name that we found agreeable that was also one hundred percent original. But our theft from the franchise ends there… Except for our first few shows where we thought it would be cool if I wore an Optimus Prime mask.
But that was quickly abandoned.
So let’s take a look at, Dj Starscream’s website. If you can bring yourself to press the enter button in the top right corner you will quickly notice that he seems to have borrowed a lot more from, Transformers than we ever have. A loading animation that shows the actual Transformer, Starscream, morphing from jet, to robot, to turntable as well as a spinning circle of Decepticon logos used as navigation for the page.
What’s wrong with this you ask? Honestly nothing at all! Cool- he’s REALLY in to Transformers, that’s great for him. Artists appropriate material from other artists all of the time, it is how some of the things we have all come to know and love have come in to existence and it is not always a bad thing. However, to appropriate as non-transformatively (pun somewhat intended) as Dj Starscream has here leaves an artist in a strange situation. While many might still respect you for your work as an artist, it is easily argued that your credibility to call others out on a lack of originality is rather low. And that’s fine until, you know, you actually go and call someone out on it.
Sid Wilson was a member of Slipkno! Even if you don’t like Slipknot, think about how incredible of a career they had. They’ve played shows to some of the hugest crowds ever and the height of their popularity was during a time when people actually paid for music. To go on from that to having a successful solo career using a stolen name, and then to bring an independent artist whose name is not even identical (Math: Dj Starscream ≠ Starscream) under scrutiny for doing exactly what he has done is an extremely pathetic move. It would be unfair of us to say that he is not thankful for everything he has, but his decision to come after us (one of many bands who have appropriated the name, Starscream) in a public manner is in poor taste and leaves us with only the hope rather than the fact that he is truly appreciative of what he has.
Many artists have had similar, even identical names in the past and have been able to coexist. We hope that’s how things play out in this scenario. While we have a strong sense of attachment to the name we have never claimed ownership or treated others who have decided to use the name as if we own it, because that would be ignorant to how things really are. While Dj Starscream may feel more entitled to the use of the name since he is the, “real O.G.,” we will wait for Hasbro or Marvel to come down on us.
To everyone who has supported us over the past few years, thank you so much. You have proven yourselves time and time again some of the the world’s most reasonable people and it’s truly an honor that you care about what we do.
Let us not be self-destructive by dwelling in matters like this, we’d much prefer to invent the future.
Despite the fact that apparently you are so unimaginative that you are forced to borrow ideas from Slipknot, i don't think less of you.
Please understand, that you_don't_have_to_go_though_all_this, just to get my attention. I love you and I'll be by your side no matter what.
see you at dinner
